Indoor Plants Brighten Up a Home
Indoor plants bring a little bit of mother nature inside. Plants serve a bunch of reasons. The first is decorative. A good indoor plant makes the room look better and can be an accent for decorating reasons. Having plants at home can build some extra responsibility for children as they take care of them by watering them regularly. Plants provide fresher air in a home by converting carbon dioxide into fresh oxygen.
Not all plants are suitable for indoor use however. They need to be of a size that matches your space. They need to thrive in situations that don’t have as much light and need to be able to be watered. However, as long as you give your indoor plants the right tender love and care, they will thrive and grow. In turn, your home or workplace will be a more beautiful place!
Desk Plants
There’s a wide variety of different plants that can fit perfectly on your desk at work or at home. Most are chosen because they don’t require full light outdoors. Indoor plants tend to be a bit hardier and easy to take care of.
- Spider plants are fast growing plants that produce offshoots that can be replanted to create extra plants.
- African Violets add a pop of color to any room and they bloom several times per year.
- The Yucca plant is a leafy spiky tropical plant that just needs a lot of sunlight to be happy at home.
- The guiana chestnut goes by a more exciting name (The Money Tree). They have an intriguing braided trunk. Indirect light is the key to growing a great guiana chestnut.
- If you need a low light plant, then a dragon tree is a great indoor plant. The downside is it isn’t the most pet friendly and must be kept away from them if you have them.
- If you don’t have much of a green thumb, try getting some Mother-in-law’s Tongue. This plant is well known for being fine without water for a long period of time and not complaining. Of course, this makes the name a bit of an oxymoron, but still a great houseplant!
Herb Gardens
Many people like to do indoor plants with a purpose. Herb gardens are a great choice and often are grown beside a window. Fresh herbs offer beautiful fragrance and flavor to foods, which is part of the allure. While druid herbs can often be used, some fresh herbs will make your cooking tastier.
There are several herbs which are commonly grown indoors. Basil is a great fit and adds a burst of freshness. Rosemary can be used to help flavor many proteins and grows out looking like a little pine tree. Mint grows really well in many scenarios and smells incredible. Chives are a very simple herb that grow easily. Basically, you can choose whichever herbs you like to eat and love to smell. Try opening a window when the breeze is blowing in over the herb garden. The scent can spread throughout your entire home!
Hydroponic Use At Home
Home hydroponic systems have become incredibly popular recently as people try to grow organic plants at home. Hydroponics is a water based system that ensures the plant roots consistently have access to oxygen in the water they take in. Despite this, there’s no risk of overwatering. Indoor plant hydroponics often focus on vegetable plants. In some cases, they can be simply decorative plants.
In addition to the hydroponic system, UV lamps are required so that the plants get the correct form of light. Prices vary widely. A small simple setup might be arranged for between $100 and $200. More impressive systems can run into the thousands depending on how much you’re trying to accomplish with your indoor growth.
